Cristian Germán Gort

Cristian Germán Gort, artistic director of the Orchestre symphonique de l'Isle

Cristian Gort is currently the artistic director and conductor of Orchestre symphonique de l’Isle, as well as the Musica Viva choral society. He is also the guest conductor of the McGill Contemporary Music Ensemble and guest professor of the contemporary music workshops at Université de Montréal as Lorraine Vaillancourt’s assistant.

His strong interest in 20th and 21st century music has led him to participate in the premieres of many works of composers from different parts of the world. He took part in Tim Brady's opera tour, Three Cities in the life of Dr. Norman Bethume as well as in the production of Alban Berg’s Wozzeck in Lille, France. Under the staging of Alice Ronfard, he conducted Analia Llugdar's musical theatre psychodrama La Faim d’Artaud as well as Jimmie Leblanc’s opera-performance Perdre Pied. Under Pauline Vaillancourt's stage direction, he conducted John Oliver's opéra augmenté Alternate Visions at Usine C in Montreal. He was later part of the North American premiere of Fausto Romitelli's video-opera An Index of Metal. Recently, at the National School of Theatre under the stage direction of Gaetan Pare, he conducted Sans électricité, les oiseaux disparaissent, photopera by Vincent Olivier-Gagnon and libretto by Éric Noël; Ben Shemi's Foudroyé, libretto by Mireille Maynard-Fisette, and the Opéra-Cabaret Bungalopolis, composed by M. Goulet, E. Champagne, B. Côté, P.-O. Roy and F. Chiasson, a Code d’Accès production.

He has worked with various ensembles in Amsterdam, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, France, Taïwan and the Czech Republic. He participated in the International Conducting Competition in São Paulo, Brazil, as well as in the NEM's 8th International Composers' Forum, at the Musiekcentrum De Ijsbreker, Amsterdam. He completed a Master’s degree in Orchestra Conducting at the Conservatoire de Musique du Québec in Montreal under maestro Raffi Armenian. He holds a Master’s degree in Composition from Université Laval under François Morel and Alain Perron. He also undertook studies in composition at Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, Argentina, his home country. He is also the recipient of the Santa Cecilia Award in Argentina (2003).
